Managing our environmental, social and governance performance

We consider, measure, and report on Hempel's material Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects of our business alongside financial considerations such as growth. Our ESG focus areas are reflected in and driven by the 'Operating and Engaging Responsibly' component of our 2030 Sustainability Mission. Our ESG targets are aligned accordingly with the pillars of Environment, Safety and Social Responsibility, to operationalise our Mission.

Environment

Reducing our emissions in line with our validated Science Based Targets and reducing our overall environmental impacts such as waste and water.

  • Scope 1, 2 & 3 CO₂e emissions targets

    Reduce Scope 1 & 2 CO2e emissions by 90% by 2030.

    Reduce Scope 3 CO2e emissions in our value chain by 55% per Value Added by 2030.

  • Waste and circularity target

    Achieve less than 1% waste to landfill and incineration from our factories by 2030.

Safety

Our commitment to safety is foundational to our culture, extending from our people to our products. We want everyone at Hempel to feel safe, respected and treated fairly, and that starts with our focus on the health and safety of our people and the environments they work in.

This commitment extends beyond our workplace to the materials we use. Through our Hazardous Raw Materials Program, we aim to limit harmful substances in our products, to increase the safety for our workers, customers and applicators. 
  • Employee Safety target

    Build an even stronger safety culture, aiming for zero Lost Time Accidents and other injuries by 2030.

  • Hazardous Materials removal target

    We aim for the reduction and phase out of 10% of hazardous materials in our products, year on year, until 2030.

Social responsibility

A diverse workforce and an inclusive culture benefit all colleagues, while improving decision-making, innovation and collaboration. We want everyone at Hempel to feel safe, respected and treated fairly.

Our goal is to become an employer and brand known for its inclusive culture. By becoming stronger in this field, we will continue to attract a diverse group of employees, which we believe is paramount to our future success.

In addition to building a diverse organisation, we also prioritise responsible practices within our complex global supply chain through our Sustainable Procurement program. By taking a structured approach and collaborating closely with suppliers, we drive progress on key sustainability topics. 

  • Gender Diversity target

    We aim for no more than 60% of our leadership team and no more than 60% of our workforce to be the same gender by 2030.

  • Sustainable Procurement Program target
    We aim to screen suppliers for ESG performance and to have 85% of our direct spend with high ESG performing suppliers by 2030.
