Accelerating our sustainability journey through

Science-based targets

Science-based targets are goals set by a company to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to a level in line with keeping global warming within 1.5°C. With a clearly defined pathway a company can help prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business success.

Like all companies, we have a responsibility to reduce the emissions our operations create and the amount of resources we use to create our products. Hempel’s CO2 targets are validated by the Science-based targets initiative which is the global authority that independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.

Our key goals

Get ready to explore our ambitious goals aligned with the Science-based targets initiative. In the following section, we'll delve deeper into the key targets we've set, driving our commitment to a sustainable future.

Reduce CO2e emissions from our own operations by 90% by end of 2026

In 2023, we expanded our efforts to phase out fossil fuel equipment and initiated the installation of solar panels:

  • We focused on installing solar panels to generate renewable electricity, primarily at our Decorative and EMEA production sites.
  • Additionally, we began transitioning away from fossil fuel equipment in favor of lower carbon technologies.

We are now working to expand our decarbonisation initiatives to cover applicable nonproduction sites, including warehouses, offices and retail stores.

Reduce CO2e emissions from our value chain by 50% by end of 2030

For our value chain (Scope 3) CO2e emissions, we had an increase of 7% in 2023 compared to 2022. In 2023, we progressed our efforts around Scope 3 with continued focus on our three value chain decarbonisation themes:

  • Use less by providing longer-lasting coating solutions and through services that optimise paint application and use ,
  • Sell different products by optimising our product assortment and providing coatings that deliver the same technical performance with a lower CO2e footprint
  • Improve existing products by working with our product formulations to phase out raw materials with the greatest CO2e footprint
