Accelerating our sustainability journey

On our way to Environment, Social & Governance performance

ESG considerations help stakeholders understand how an organization is managing risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance issues. What this means in practice is companies that adopt ESG principles consider, measure, and report on the Environmental, Social, and Governance aspects of their business alongside its financial considerations (profit, expenses, growth, accounting).

‘Action’ is critical for us. ‘Turning our ambitions into action’ has required us to continuously seek new knowledge around sustainability. Our sustainability framework, Futureproof, has been instrumental in driving our work. To maintain a position of sustainability leadership in the future, and to prepare for the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), we will focus on the ESG issues that are most material to our business. Our approach is based on double materiality assessments, that enable us to define, act and report on issues where Hempel has a significant impact; greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, resource consumption, waste disposal, hazardous materials, and social and economic inequality.

Environment

In 2024, we made significant progress on our science-based targets and ESG commitments. Our Scope 1 & 2 emissions dropped by 65% from our 2019 baseline. We formalized reporting metrics and governance for Scope 3 emissions, and are now setting clear KPIs.
  • Scope 1, 2 & 3 CO₂ emissions goals
    • 90% reduction of Scope 1 & 2 CO2 e emissions by 2026.
    • Reduce CO2 emissions in our value chain by 50% by 2030 (scope 3)
  • Products and packaging goals
    • Achieve 50% recycled plastic in primary plastic packaging by end of 2025
  • Waste and circularity goals
    • Achieve zero waste to landfill at our production sites by end of 2025.

Social

A diverse workforce and an inclusive culture benefit all colleagues, while improving decision-making, innovation and collaboration. We want everyone at Hempel to feel safe, respected and treated fairly. Our goal is to become an employer and brand known for its inclusive culture. By becoming a leader in this field, we will continue to attract a diverse group of employees, which we believe is paramount to our future success. Our Hazardous Raw Materials Programme aims to limit harmful substances in our products and reduce environmental impact. We're committed to achieving recycled content in plastic packaging and minimizing waste sent to landfills.
  • People sustainability goals
    • Build an even stronger safety culture and eliminate all Lost Time Accidents and other injuries.
    • Achieve the targets of 34% women in general workforce and 31% women in leadership by 2024.
    • Complete a five-year plan to reduce and phase out hazardous materials.

Governance

Compliance cases
Hempel maintains an external whistleblower system allowing anyone to anonymously report potential irregularities or unethical behavior. This secure portal ensures swift reporting and resolution of any issues.

Sustainable Procurement Programme
With a complex global supply chain, Hempel prioritizes responsible practices. Through our Sustainable Procurement Programme, we collaborate closely with suppliers, earning an A score in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Supplier Engagement Rating. This structured approach fosters dialogue and development on environmental sustainability topics.
  • Key goal within governance
    • Our goal is to screen suppliers representing 70% of our total spend by 2025.
