Hempel aims to move the needle towards a decarbonised future at COP27

Key messages

  • Hempel A/S participates in the UN climate summit COP27
  • At COP27, Hempel will be looking to add its voice to important conversations in the renewable energy and shipping industries

“The climate crisis is an urgent global challenge. Nobody can stand alone in this. I am proud that Hempel is at COP27 to take part in conversations about how we can accelerate moving the needle towards a decarbonised future. There are technologies available to us already and now is the time to implement these solutions,” says Hempel Group President and CEO, Michael Hansen.

At COP27, we will be looking to add our voice to important conversations in the renewable energy and shipping industries, in which our sustainable coating solutions enable our customers to reduce emissions. Our premium vessel hull coating has already enabled fuel savings equivalent to 27 million tonnes of COover more than 3,000 applications*.

Having approved Science Based Targets, we will share our current practices turning ambitions to action and call for partners to share how we can accelerate the journey to lower carbon emissions in own value chains.

“We strive to put sustainability at the heart of everything we do. Like all companies, we have a responsibility to reduce the emissions our operations create and the amount of resources we use. To this end, our Science Based Targets will see us reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% in 2026. We are also addressing our Scope 3 emissions, committing to a 50% reduction across our full value chain by 2030,” says Michael Hansen.

Hempel’s presence at COP27:

  • Hempel is part of the Danish Pavilion at COP27
  • 16 November: Panel discussion with Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Danish Maritime Authorities, Topsoe & MAN Energy Solutions - Regulations as a key enabler of maritime decarbonization in the Danish pavilion
  • 17 November: Panel discussion with Velux and Carbon Trust - Moving from commitments to tangible solutions in Scope 3 in the Danish pavilion
  • 17 November:  Panel discussion with Velux and Carbon Trust - Moving from commitments to tangible solutions in Scope 3 in the Nordic pavilion

 * The savings related to the 3,000 vessel applications have been calculated by estimating the fuel savings of each Hempaguard application against a market average coating, based on market average numbers from the Fourth IMO GHG Study. For Hempaguard applications, the consumption, activity, duration until next dry dock and relative savings from the IMO GHG Study are estimated and the impact from the full DD cycle is summarized in the year of Hempaguard application, where the coating choice and thus fuel savings decision is taken.
