Hempel inaugurates its new Campus

World-leading coatings company Hempel welcomed over 200 guests to the inauguration of its new Campus, which features a newly constructed office building and a state-of-the art R&D facility. Hempel Campus is unique in its architectural approach and is the international headquarters for the Hempel Group.

World-leading coatings company, Hempel A/S, opened its doors today to over 200 guests for the inauguration of its new Campus.

“We call it a campus because not only is this Hempel’s global headquarters, it is also a centre of learning and knowledge-sharing. This is where we will shape the future of coatings so Hempel’s solutions can continue to protect, beautify and improve the performance of its customers’ most valuable assets around the world,” said Richard Sand, Chair of the Board of Directors of Hempel A/S, in his speech at the event, going on to talk in more detail about the development.

“Over the course of three years, we have added 18,000 square meters and the entire campus now houses almost 400 employees across 26,000 square metres,” he added.

“It is a campus where we come in every day to learn and challenge each other to find new solutions to customer challenges to shape a brighter future together,” said Lars Petersson, Group President and CEO.

Sofia Osmani, Mayor of Lyngby-Taarbæk, also spoke at the event, celebrating the good collaboration enjoyed by the local municipality and Hempel: “Hempel has been a part of our local community for many, many years and I still meet people living in Lundtoftepark, who have worked here for many decades. Of course, Hempel has changed a lot over the years - now it’s no longer production that takes place at Hempel HQ, but all the knowledge-based research and development. I think that’s a great thing and something that goes well with the setting we have here in Lyngby-Taarbæk, with the proximity to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and other companies, really contributing to the “City of Knowledge” idea.”

Unique Hempel design

With the design of the first headquarters building in 2011, a strong link between Hempel’s identity, history and physical environment was established. It was inspired by the action of stirring a new colour into the centre of a can of paint, forming a pattern known as a spiral vertex.

The spiral motion still lies at the core of the Campus design, running from the visitors hallway, through the atrium, and reaching its fullest expression in the five storey spiral staircase in our new office building. This also reflects the shape and flow of the Hempel logo.

The new R&D facility will be a hub for international scientists and contribute to accelerating and strengthening our development of innovative solutions for the future. This is a key element of our new Double Impact strategy.

Futureproofing our HQ

The new office building has been designed with a focus on sustainability and will be DGNB certified (German environmental label for sustainable architecture). Solar panels have been installed on the roof and more will follow in 2022. Combined, they are expected to produce 85,000 kWh of electricity per year.

The new Hempel Campus consists of offices, meeting rooms, laboratories and test facilities, equivalent to more than 26,000 m2 or over three and a half football pitches of space. Located just north of Copenhagen, Denmark, Hempel Campus is the daily workplace to over 350 Hempel employees. Construction of the new Campus began in 2017 and also includes an existing office building and test facility. The entire Hempel Campus is expected to be finished in 2022 and has been designed by Sweco Architects.
