Spectacular Queensferry Crossing protected by Hempel
Hempel was chosen to provide tough coating protection against corrosion to the new Queensferry Crossing, scheduled to open this summer. Located on the busy Forth Estuary near Edinburgh on the east coast of Scotland, it boasts an impressive total length of 2.7 kilometres, making it the longest three-tower cable bridge in the world.
The bridge’s road deck is made from more than 35,000 tons of steel, manufactured in the UK and China and then transported to Scotland by sea. In order to withstand the impacts and exposure of this 7,700-kilometre journey it was vital that the coatings be tough, and also robust enough to protect the bridge from the harsh Scottish climate and coastal conditions.
Due to Hempel’s extensive experience and its high-quality products the steel manufacturer, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC), made the easy decision to choose Hempel’s high performance anti-corrosion systems.
Kai Zhao, Project Manager, ZPMC said:
“We choose Hempel coatings because we know the paint and we know the service we can expect. The coatings have good and stable performance in corrosion protection, and the technical services are professional, precise and everywhere, providing great support to this project. We have worked with Hempel for many years, with great success.”
Hempel has supplied over 600,000 litres of Hempel paint for this project and has now coated four of the world’s ten largest cable-stayed bridges.
