Countdown to Sailing World Championships 2018 continues
As title sponsor, we’re really looking forward to the Hempel Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark next year. A new sailing sports centre is being built for the event, and we were invited to the topping-out ceremony yesterday with many of Denmark’s top VIPs, including Crown Prince Frederik.
We gathered with many others in Aarhus on 10 August for the topping-out ceremony for the new Aarhus International Sailing Sports Centre. The centre is expected to be ready early next year, and will host the Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus Denmark 2018 in August.
The Hempel Sailing World Championships 2018 is expected to draw nearly 1,500 sailors from 100 countries, as well as 400,000 visitors, making it one of the biggest sailing events ever held. The fantastic new centre will be the central hub for the event, where sailors, officials and visitors will gather. As title sponsor of the event, Hempel will have a VIP area at the centre during the championships.
Construction of the centre is running to schedule, and the topping-out ceremony was an opportunity to thank all the tradespeople who have worked so hard on the project so far. A number of people gave speeches at the event, including the Mayor of Aarhus Jacob Bundsgaard, who singled out Hempel for our contribution and support.

- The Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus Denmark 2018 will include all 10 Olympic boat classes. Kitesurfing will be added to the programme for the first time.
- Around 1,500 sailors from more than 100 nations will take part, making it one of the largest sailing events ever held.
- Around 400,000 visitors are expected in Aarhus for the event.
- Held concurrently to the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, a large festival will provide maritime experiences for visiting families.

What is a topping-out ceremony?
A topping-out ceremony is traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed on top of a structure during its construction. The ceremony is an age-old tradition that announces: progress underway. For many on construction jobs, it is a moment to celebrate and announce the project is nearing completion.
