Sustainability Mission and Reporting

Our Sustainability Mission

Creating customer value, whilst continuing to operate and engage responsibly

Hempel’s 2030 Sustainability Mission focuses on where we can unlock documented value for our customers and our business. It sets out the priorities and targets that help us turn our ambition into action and track our progress.
The Mission has two focus areas: creating customer value through selected coating technologies, and operating and engaging responsibly.

By 2030, we aim to help our customers

  • Reduce CO₂e emissions by an estimated cumulative 50 million tonnes through selected Hempel technologies, calculated against defined reference products and scenarios
  • Reduce biocide release to marine environments by an estimated 5,000 tonnes through selected Hempel coating technologies, compared with conventional antifouling systems

Both figures are cumulative estimates for selected technologies and applications over 2026–2030. The calculations are based on defined products, reference scenarios, assumptions and system boundaries.

Creating customer value

Hempel develops advanced coating technologies to meet specific customer needs and address environmental challenges. For selected technologies, we estimate and document their contribution to outcomes such as reduced fuel and material use, lower associated CO₂e emissions, longer coating protection and reduced biocide release.
For customers, this can mean lower operating costs, more efficient resource use and extended asset lifetimes. The impact depends on the product, application and conditions in which it is used.

Our customer-value work is organised around three value drivers: Efficiency, durability and liveability.

Helping customers reduce fuel, energy or coating-material use and related costs through selected technologies, compared with defined reference products or scenarios.
Helping customers extend asset lifetime and reduce maintenance with selected coating systems, compared with reference systems under specified conditions.
Addressing specific impacts on living spaces and marine environments through documented product attributes, such as VOC content, recognised certifications, reduced exposure to selected substances or reduced biocide release.

Operating and engaging responsibly

Our responsibility also includes how we run our business and work with people and partners across our value chain. Here, the Mission groups our operations-related ambitions into three areas: Environment, Safety and Social Responsibility. These cover defined targets for greenhouse-gas emissions and waste; workplace and product safety; and gender diversity and responsible supply chains.
Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in line with our SBTi-validated targets and working towards our target of sending less than 1% of waste from our own factories to landfill and incineration by 2030.
Keeping our people safe with the aim to reduce lost time accidents to zero, and reducing hazardous materials in our formulations.
Advancing gender diversity in our workforce and leadership, while increasing the share of direct spend with suppliers that meet and exceed Hempel’s defined ESG performance thresholds.
