Protecting the Louvre from saltwater, sand and heat in Abu Dhabi

Built in 2015, the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi is a striking and innovative building that combines modern architecture and tradition. Two-thirds of the museum is covered by a white dome, which was built by one of the Middle East's leading structural steel design and construction companies.

The challenge
The white dome consists of 8,000 tonnes of perforated steelwork. As the museum is poised between the sea and sand on Saadiyat Island, the dome needs a coating system that can protect it against aggressively corrosive sea salts, sand and heat – while also ensuring the dome will maintain its striking white colour for years to come.

The solution
Our coating system is designed specifically to withstand the harsh saltwater environment and desert conditions. The combination of Galvosil and Hempadur Mastic ensures excellent weather and abrasion resistance, and the Hempathane topcoat gives the dome a long-lasting and beautiful gloss finish.
