2014 Winter Olympics legacy protected by Hempel
The challenge
The climate in Sochi features rapid temperature changes and is challenging for coatings projects, especially in winter when humidity can reach 85 per cent. The scale of the project means conditions vary greatly, from the saltwater marine environments by the Black Sea to the Caucasus Mountains, where freezing temperatures lead to significant condensation on metal surfaces. Overall, the project was classified as C4, but each element of the project required its own specifically designed coating system that could ensure a robust and attractive finish that would help maintain the Olympic legacy for years to come.
The solution
We established the most appropriate system for each construction, from steel and concrete bridges to infrastructure facilities and even the Olympic bobsleigh run. For the tunnel linings of the Kurortny Avenue Relief Road, for example, we provided a system based on our Contex coating that provides long-term protection as a result of it’s anti-carbonation properties. Due to time pressures, large amounts of coatings had to be supplied within a short space of time, and our technical service teams worked closely with applicators across the region to ensure application was as fast and efficient as possible.
