Before the 2014 Winter Olympics, Russia had to modernise its transport infrastructure in the Sochi region. A huge feat of modern engineering, the project included constructing 12 mountain tunnels, 71 bridges and flyovers, and new passenger stations.
The climate in Sochi features high humidity and rapid temperature changes. Overall, the project was classified as C4, but the scale of the project means conditions vary greatly, from saltwater marine environments by the Black Sea to freezing temperatures in the Caucasus Mountains.
We established the most appropriate system for each construction, from metal and concrete bridges to infrastructure facilities and even the Olympic bobsleigh run. Due to time pressures, large amounts of coatings had to be supplied within a short space of time. Many contractors were involved in the project, and our Technical Service teams worked with each one to ensure application was as fast and efficient as possible.
