Education Projects

Education has the power to transform childrens’ lives, now and for generations to come. Education improves health and helps break the circle of poverty that traps so many.

Our different school projects around the world help many children receive a good education. In this way we believe we can contribute to build sustainable communities and make our world a better place.

  1. A school in South Africa

While the South African Constitution guarantees universal primary education, the quality of that education remains dismal for most South African children. Against a background of poor state schooling, Vuleka Schools represent a beacon of hope to so many children. The Vuleka School provides underprivileged black children with high quality, affordable education, which gives them the opportunity to be successfully placed in high schools of their choice. The school that Hempel supports is placed in North Riding and contains 193 children.

  2. Two schools in Mozambique

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and a country that has suffered tremendously with a 16 year civil war. But Mozambique is on the raise and international companies have within the last year begun to invest in the country. To really obtain sustainable growth the level of education in the country needs to be better. To help this development the Hempel Foundation is supporting two primary schools with a total of 1400 children with a modern schooling programme. The programme is re-education of the teachers, new and better school books, build school libraries and provide education in life skills such as gardening, carpentry and sewing
  3. Three schools in Pune, India

India´s rapid economic growth over the past decade has created a new wealth and future for India. But unfortunately 40% of the population are still living in poverty and India has the largest illiterate population in the world. 7 million children in India under 14 years do not have access to quality education and approximately 50% of all children drop out before they complete their elementary education.

To help improve India’s education situation Hempel is supporting three schools in Pune which is located 200 km east of Mumbai. The schools are part of the same community in one of the less-developed areas of Pune. Among the improvements are development of new materials for teaching and learning, improvement of the physical environment of the schools and help teachers become familiar with teaching methods that are both innovative and sound.

  4. A new school in Cambodia

Cambodia has been affected by war and political unrest for many years. The infamous Khmer Rouge regime that ruled Cambodia in the seventies is said to have killed 1.5 million people. They systemically destroyed teaching materials, burned down schools and killed large number of teachers. Since the late 1990s Cambodia has been living in peace but the country suffers from its violent history and its school system needed to be totally rebuilt. The Hempel Foundation gave money to help pay for the construction of a new school in Battambang and is today co-funding the daily running of the school. The school opened in 2009 and is now filled with 500 children eager to learn to read and write.

  5. Two Education Centres in West Bengal, India

Brick-making is a big industry in India and millions of unskilled workers are employed in the brick kilns, where many of them are children. These children live a hard life with long working days and no access to health service, playgrounds or education. The Hempel Foundation is in the process of building two education centres which will be ready to receive children in November 2011. The centres will provide the children with food, healthcare and effective pre-education during the day. The aim is to teach the children all the necessary skills as quickly as possible enabling them to enter the local educational system, get a proper education and the possibility for a better future.
  6. Five Migrant Schools in Shanghai, China

In China there is a right for education for all children. However, the explosive social and economic growth, primarily, in the big cities attracts a lot of migrant’s workers, who come to cities like Shanghai to find work. However, that is not always easy and many migrant children are left with no access to the public schools and are socially excluded. Private schools are being set up to try to remedy this, but due to the parents lack of means to pay what is needed the schools are in need of large resources. Hempel has decided to support five migrant schools with additional funding so that the schools will be able to provide the children with a good education. 10.000 migrant children are benefitting from this project.
  7. Help for Orphaned Earthquake children in Chengdu, China

The 12th May 2008 earthquake in the Suchuan province was one of the worst disasters in the China´s history. About 87.000 people died and many children were left orphaned with the loss of parents or the whole family.

The SOS Children’s Village in Chengdu was appointed the official reception centre for earthquake orphans and the Hempel Foundation went in with immediate economic help. The Hempel Foundation continued the support and is today funding one family house with 8 children and their SOS mother.

  8. SOS-Childrens' Village in Lujan, Argentina

Argentina is the second largest country in South America.  It is rich in resources, has a well-educated workforce and is one of South America's largest economies, but the economic collapse in 2001 left more than half the population in poverty. Recovery has been rapid but a lot of Argentines still live in poverty.  Lots of children are suffering from living in marginalised and vulnerable families, lacking the possibilities for better future.

The SOS children’s village in Lujan, just outside Buenos Aires, provides a new home for orphaned as well as socially exposed children, giving them the possibility for a new caring home, an education and a new start in life. Hempel is supporting one family house with 8 children.
