Our Strategy

Our strategy, One Hempel – One Ambition, will put us in the top ten leading coatings suppliers in the world by 2015.

The coatings industry is changing. Customers and suppliers are growing, operating costs continue to rise and competitors are getting larger. We need to grow our company if we’re to continue delivering the most efficient coating solutions to our customers. That’s what One Hempel – One Ambition is all about – and we’re focusing on three core areas to make it a reality.

  1. Quadruple sales in Decorative

    The decorative segment, including interior and exterior paints for homeowners and residential buildings, already represents a significant part of our business. Our Decorative business will increase through acquisitions and through the organic growth of our existing Decorative businesses in locations such as Southern Europe, the Middle East and China.


  2. Double sales in Protective

    By further improving our operational efficiency and by focusing more on developing markets, we will continue to take greater global market share. We will improve our customisation efforts in local markets and aggressively increase our ability to win larger and cross-border orders. The Oil and GasPower Generation and Infrastructure sub-segments, in particular, are areas with significant potential for growth in the Protective market.


  3. Be a global Marine challenger

    With continued attention to profitability, we will sharpen our competitive offerings to increase market share in this segment. We will become more competitive in Dry Docking – by continuing to focus on fouling control and technical service, and by continuing to develop solutions that create value for our customers. We will, at the same time, manage our profitability in the Sea Stock segment as we grow in a very competitive market.


Continuing to build to 2015
For us, implementing a new strategy is a bit like building a house. Our previous strategy, One Hempel – Everywhere, laid the foundations by improving our skills and ensuring every customer, wherever they are in the world, gets the same high quality Hempel service. Now, we’re ready to construct the rest of the house.

Starting with five ‘pillars’ – a sequence of focused projects across five key organisational functions – we will continue to construct our house of ambition. Once completed, the pillars will provide a solid base for our roof structure: our strategy’s three core segments: DecorativeProtective and Marine.
