Shopprimers are thin coatings which are automatically applied in line production to steel plates and profiles after blast cleaning to provide temporary corrosion protection during transport, storage and production. Hempel offers a range of different shop primer products, including solvent or water borne epoxy or zinc silicates, to cater for the customer’s requirements to application, performance or compliance with rules and regulations.

The commonly desired requirements to shop primers are that they should provide easy application, fast drying, excellent adhesion, compatibility with subsequent paint systems, excellent corrosion protection, excellent welding and cutting properties, resistance to normal mechanical impact as well as exposure to water and other elements commonly encountered in the building process.

• HEMPEL’S SHOPPRIMER ZS 1589 is a zinc silicate based shopprimer developed to help newbuilding yards obtain optimum production flow by combining superior corrosion protection, excellent cutting and welding properties as well as excellent overcoatability.
  
  
• HEMPEL’S SHOPPRIMER ZS 1589 is compliant with the requirements of the IMO PSPC (Performance Standard for Protective Coatings) for coatings to be used in ballast tanks at newbuilding stage. PSPC entered into force for shipbuilding contracts signed on or after 1st July 2008.
  
  
• HEMPEL’S SHOPPRIMER ZS 1589 is compatible and type approved together with the entire Hempel PSPC compliant ballast tank coating assortment as well as with other commonly used ballast tank epoxy coatings in the marine coatings market.
